“Steve Reynolds Making a Splash Downriver”
Excerpts of a review by Michael Gray Frick August 11, 2004
Steve Reynolds, Flagstaff’s very own critically acclaimed musical icon, this week is releasing his much anticipated new CD, “Downriver,” an album packed to the gills with enough musical variety and good times to float any listener’s boat.
Like the proverbial river, the album has its many twists and turns; calm melodic stretches, hypnotic swirling fingerpickin’ eddies and roiling, rockin’ rapids. “Downriver” shoves off with the title song…..a jazzy ditty that lulls with a laid back bossa beat; a soothing dreamy sax (provided by his brother Stu)-- then ahoy! Wake up, there’s rapids ahead: track two begins the bebopping with the binge drinking tune, “Don’t Growl (If Ya Can’t Bite),” that simply rocks, with slippery pedal guitar, bleating sax and blazing horn section…….
“Downriver” was locally mixed and mastered by Chris Donnelly at Sundisc Studio and Reynolds can’t say enough good things about Donnelly. And he should, for the production quality is incredible—a professionally mixed and mastered CD without the usual soul-killing over-produced sound so prevalent in most local band albums nowadays. Whatever type of tune Reynolds plays on “Downriver,” it works. He’s a multi-talent who deserves a listen, and a big round of applause for this stunning CD.
